The Daily Ping

This Ping redesign took 7 years and cost $58 million in taxpayer dollars.

A fond farewell

It’s easy to start things. It’s hard to finish them. But here we are, in 2013, and it’s time to say goodbye to The Daily Ping.

When we started this little site in 2000. It was just a few days past the turn of the millennium (or not — remember when people argued about that incessantly?) and we had no idea what to expect. We did this before blogs, Facebook, YouTube, the iPhone, and Wikipedia existed. And really all we ever wanted to do was have a little fun every day. We kept that up for a good long time.

In its recent years, though, the Ping entered adolescence and boy, you know how awkward that can be. It started to see the world and consider its place in the world. And by no coincidence, both of us started to build families. Hold jobs. Appear on television. Eat fewer Oreos. All of that stuff. At one point we disliked missing a post at a certain time each day, but by the end we were both playing catch up on previous days and sometimes even months. Younger us was (were?) starting to really hate older us.

So we talked it out this year and decided that the site would be best served without a daily schedule. That’s right: The Daily Ping is no longer and, in its place, we now present The Yearly Ping. Well, soon we will. We’ve got until January to get it online.

Once a year, Ryan and I will write an entry about a topic. As was the case with The Daily Ping, Ryan will write in odd-numbered years and Paul will write in even-numbered years. We’ll be writing something every January 6th, in honor of the launch date of The Daily Ping.

All of this is well and good of course, but the site wouldn’t have been possible without a great audience of devotees – especially those of you who bought boxer shorts from our CafePress store. Thank you for reading and supporting our toilet fixation.

Hugs & Kisses,
Paul & Ryan

I can’t say I didn’t see this coming, but I didn’t expect it to hurt this much. I will miss our times together, The Daily Ping, especially the mornings. We’ve been through so much and had so many conversations about Oreos, toilets, tow truck drivers, garbage disposals, quick lube places, and old TV shows. It will be hard to make this transition. But whenever I walk into a bathroom or see a certain coquettish brunette advertising a law firm, tax office, or any number of other businesses with an office environment, I’ll think fondly of you. That’ll do, Ping. That’ll do.

I’m sorry to see you guys go. I’ve been waiting a while for the January 6th post about Just The Ten of Us, but alas, it is no more. I wish you guys all the best.

Drat! I’ve had a lot of fun here over the years. Just when DP got really popular, I’d say, the web hosting changed or something and without the instant posting of comments, there was no more dialog occurring between Pingers and the site slowed down quite a bit. Too bad. My eyes were opened here sometimes to points of view that I couldn’t even believe came from modern people (Bob Jones University), to feeling proud when I handed out really useful tips that Pingers benefitted from and thanked me for (do not wet your toothpaste on a Sonicare) to defending one of the most maligned cars in world history (Yugo). In between, I’ve enjoyed the Ping, mostly in and around the summer of 2002 when I was a tech support guy for a bank, and DP provided a nice break between calls. Good luck Ryan and Paul. I, too, now have a growing family to look after.

Hello! I used to be a regular on the daily ping and just looked you up again while reminiscing about the early aughts. Congrats on your families, and thanks for the awesome site. It was a lot of fun for me while I was in college.

Sad to see you go. It was a pingful time.

What is this then?

The Daily Ping is the web's finest compendium of toilet information and Oreo™® research. Too much? Okay, okay, it's a daily opinion column written by two friends. Did we mention we've been doing this for over ten years? Tell me more!
