Do you have any small, old school, hometown movie theaters left near you? The last one in the area closed up in September of this year. It was sad – even in our short time here, I had a lot of fond memories: the midnight movies throughout October, showing of low-budget local films like “Zombie vs. Ninja,” and having our daughter’s fifth birthday party there, renting out an entire theater for a few hours. The spot is still there, transforming into a performing arts space (with some promising shows in the coming months), but it’s just not the same.
My favorite, though, has got to be the old Harwan Theatre in Mt. Ephraim, NJ, where in the late 90s and early 2000s, I saw many a great horror 35mm print thanks to Exhumed Films. Here are some shots of the Harwan and here’s the building being torn down. Sad.
