The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Brought to You By Macy’s, is now a part of my family’s holiday tradition.
We started out slow by having it on in the background, just kind of while other things were happening. Occasionally a notable public figure would appear before Santa did. Now that my son is old enough to get it, though, it’s even better. He likes the idea of a parade and, well, who doesn’t like to see Santa at the very end?
The only thing that disappointed me: there is precious little actual parading on the broadcast. I know! Until the parade reaches the cameras at Macy’s flagship store, it’s mostly scenes from Broadway musicals and the like. That’s not inherently bad, just not a parade. You know?
Coupled with the incessant promotions (“Hey, it’s that guy who stars in that NBC show!”), it’s almost a bit too much. But then I see how my son’s eyes light up when he sees a marching band and, well, it’s worth it.
