Used car shopping

I’m going to be used car shopping very soon and also looking to sell our car. I’m asking you, kind Pingers, for any tips you’ve found useful when going through the process.

I’ve got a few scribbled down based on stuff I’ve found online as well as from Paul, but I can always use more “here’s what worked for me”-type advice.

Commit to nothing – Only have one person do the talking/negotiations. Don’t be afraid to walk out.

The biggest one of those, for us, was to only have one person do the talking/negotiating. If you and your wife are both going, decide beforehand who’s making the final decision and doing the talking. That way, the salesperson can’t try to pit the two of you against each other (“Oh, but Huyen says she liked it. Why don’t you?”)

I’d also do some homework about the prices of cars you might be interested in BEFORE you go. Helps you negotiate a much better deal. Good luck!

Yep. Have a price – not a payment – in mind. Negotiate everything separately. And don’t be afraid to walk away. Know when to hold ’em.

What is this then?

The Daily Ping is the web's finest compendium of toilet information and Oreo™® research. Too much? Okay, okay, it's a daily opinion column written by two friends. Did we mention we've been doing this for over ten years? Tell me more!
