I feel I have to give a shout out to Penzey’s Spices. This spice shop started expanding into our neck of the woods several years back, and I became very interested. Although my baking and cooking time has declined overall, I still really like their stuff.
I find that their spices are pretty much the same price as the McCormick and other megastore brands, but the quality is streets ahead. It’s also clear that they cater to spice geeks, too – they have multiple types of cinnamon for instance, and each is distinct. And if I ever need double-strength vanilla with 35% alcohol, I am set. Their stores offer lots of things to sniff, of course, so it’s all best experienced in person.
Their website? Yes, it is ancient and creaky, and that’s about the only thing I can ding them for. Other than that, they’re good.
