A couple of days ago I discussed the floating McDonald’s in my hometown. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that the Ping sprang forth from a visit to Pleasant Family Shopping, a blog devoted to mass merchant retail in the mid-20th century. A lot of the content seems to be Chicago-based, but there’s enough good ol’ stuff here to make it worth your while.
It’s pretty much a gold mine for activating long-dormant memories. The level of detail is excruciating in blog entries like this one, discussing 1970s shopping in Addison, Illinois. Photos and descriptions are plentiful, and in fact the photos are kind of mesmerizing. They really do showcase a time now gone, but not too far gone, wherein shopping was a very different experience.
