Unreasonable Sick Thoughts

I was under the weather this past weekend – a great time to be sick, of course – with a bit of a cold. Colds don’t act the same in me now as they did when I was a kid. Back then, I’d usually start with a nasty sniffly, runny nose and it’d work its way down to the throat. Now they start in the throat and work up to the nose. Neither is very fun.

In any case, one thing that remains true is that while I’m sick, there’ll be at least one point where I’ll start thinking unreasonable and ridiculous thoughts. I think it’s the NyQuil talking. The most common one is, obviously, “What if I can never breathe through my nose again?” This leads me to envision a future where my mouth is dry as a desert and I need a portable humidifier strapped around my neck at all times.

As I said: unreasonable.

I’d like to suggest that these unreasonable thoughts aren’t brought on by NyQuil, but a combination of extreme measures (ie, plugging up one’s nose with tissue), extreme illness (ie, going through a 900-count box of tissues from Costco), and drifting in and out of sleep.

In any case I had this moment, which I deem the Cold Nadir, yesterday; it was Tissue Day in the lifespan of my cold.

What is this then?
