I think it’s safe to say that both Ryan and I are music fiends, although only one of us has an IMDb entry. We listen to a lot of music – some good, some lousy, and lots in-between.
Last week I was driving home from running errands when I flipped on the radio, as I usually do. My ears were greeted by the song “Personal Jesus” by Depeche Mode. And at that moment I realized that I pretty much never needed to hear that song – or any song by Depeche Mode – ever again.
What triggered it, I can’t say. Perhaps it was the myriad listenings I’d already given this song despite barely finding it tolerable? Maybe it was the station? Maybe it was the age of the song?
Or maybe I had just gotten everything I ever needed or wanted to get out of the song. I first heard it – not kidding – on an MTV Party to Go compilation nearly 20 years ago. I think I enjoyed it back then as much as I enjoyed “The Humpty Dance” – and to be honest, I think I enjoy Digital Underground more. Really! Truly.
I pin some of this blame on traditional radio, too, for playing a small rotation of hits by any given artist at any given time. It’s entirely possible that Depeche Mode made some song or album that would truly blow my mind – but thanks to their overexposure in my life, I’m satisfied never knowing for sure.
