Yesterday, my work PC gave up the ghost. There are a few things I’m thankful for today as I sit working on a new machine, trying to bring myself back up to speed:
- Backup – Though I did lose some data because a few directories hadn’t been backed up as recently as they should have been, most everything else was backed up recently, so it just becomes a matter of deciding what’s worth restoring.
- Web apps – Thanks to a greater reliance on things like gmail and Google Docs for certain things, there aren’t quite as many apps I need to reinstall or data I need to re-import
- Redundant online backup – Using something like Dropbox makes it no big deal when a machine crashes since those documents live on on the web as well as on other machines.
Restoring isn’t nearly as painful as it used to be.
