RIP: Bea Arthur

Like you, I was shocked and saddened at the passing of Bea Arthur yesterday.

I was introduced to Bea’s work through The Golden Girls and only later learned about her landmark role as Maude. GG was a staple of Saturday nights in my household and Dorothy was my favorite character, really. Her sarcasm and timing was top notch, and it’s hard to hear any story about small town life without also hearing a fast follower of, “Shut up, Rose.”

Bea’s star continued to rise after GG and she continued on TV with guest appearances on Malcolm in the Middle and Futurama. She did well on Broadway with her song and story collection, Bea Arthur on Broadway: Just Between Friends.

Bea will be missed.

I, too, am saddened by the death of Bea Arthur. She was the rare celebrity that could actually laugh at herself and handle some extraordinarily mean comments. And she was damn funny right up to the end: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHd3MrMbnzY

I think one of the commenters on that YouTube video hit the nail on the head (this may be the only time in history that can be said):

“I really hope Bea & Estelle are having cheese cake together tonight.”

RIP.

What is this then?
