As mentioned here many moons ago, I can play guitar. But the truth of the matter is that I was self-taught. I learned most of what I know by playing with a couple of other friends intermittently in high school, and the rest through playing along with R.E.M. songs.
This means of course that my technique might not be so good. And yesterday as a part of an extended Christmas gift (which included a new acoustic guitar), I took my first guitar lesson – nay, my first musical instrument lesson – ever. I’ve got nothing but good news out of it.
My teacher helped me really understand how I was playing and showed me some improved ways of doing things. We talked about the types of music I liked and wanted to play, and he showed me some of the good stuff ahead. The whole thing was informal but very helpful; afterwards I kept thinking, “Why didn’t I do this years ago?”
If I can do it, you can do it.

You are so encouraging, thank you!
I heard “Talk About the Passion” on XM tonight, always a nice flashback. It’s also nice to mumble along with Michael Stipe.
