Music site Stereogum has a great feature called OldStand. Each edition takes a look at a music magazine from days gone by – usually the 80s and 90s – complete with scans and a few ads.
It’s good stuff, and also reminds me of how I really started getting into music in the first place. R.E.M. was my gateway drug into “real” music (versus lite FM stuff), and soon I was scooping up Rolling Stone and – on occasion – Spin. Looking back now, it’s amazingly bad stuff in a lot of cases. Take, for instance, the April 18, 1991 RS featuring Extreme on its cover. Extreme! “More Than Words” and, uh, that’s it!
Seems to me that one could make a great, say, daily blog by simply pulling out old magazines and making snarky jokes about them. Hm.

Oh my word, WHAT is Chris Isaak wearing? Was he an aerobics instructor before “Wicked Game” took off?

Good idea. I’ll have to start my “Song Hits” blog.
