Do One Thing and Do It Well

Hi, I’m Paul with another consumer commentary.

I read just a few days ago that Zappos was branching out into electronics. Now, listen: I like Zappos (although I miss their overnight shipping and competitor price match). But really, does Zappos need to enter that market? Shoes and electronics? I mean, Amazon’s already got that Wal-Martish market covered, right?

It’s just a little frustrating to me because they’re the latest in a long line of companies which are trying to do too many things. Dunkin’ Donuts, for instance, is now selling pizza and sandwiches. Starbucks did the whole breakfast sandwich thing and failed. Menards, a home improvement store, sells candy and some food items. Krispy Kreme does fruity smoothies. Jamba Juice has granola-y breakfasts.

It’s like every single store needs to be a shopping mall. Every store doesn’t need to be a shopping mall!

(I guess this is another covert salute to Chick-Fil-A. They have chicken. No hamburgers. No cheeseburgers. Chicken. That’s it.)
