Soon, I’ll be a homeowner. This is a pretty big step up from an apartment as you can imagine, so I’ve been asking people what things one should get as essentials.
The most helpful? A good quality drill. The strangest? A toilet snake. (But after hearing why one should have one, I certainly can understand that.)
So what else do I need? Don’t worry; a hose, bidet, lawnmower, and snowblower are already on the list.

I’d go beyond drill and recommender a stocked tool box in general, and a large selection of screws, nails, bolts etc. Especially if your house is older you’ll be fixing something frequently.
Google “homeowners toolkit” or something similar to find lots of recommendations on what you need.
A good quality plunger is a necessity too. Actually, two plungers. One for toilet bowls and one for sinks.
Oh, and congratulations.

Just discovered your site today via the hardball video.
Anyways, i’d suggest buying a “home repair” book which you can probably pick up at “home depot” or the usual suspects.
Getting to know how (costly to repair) things in your home work (e.g. furnace) is time well spent, in my opinion.

Toilet snakes? Plungers? Bah! All you need is a bucket!

My most useful housewarming gift was a cool bucket from Target. I use it daily in warm months to empty my dehumidifier.
I also recommend buying several sprinkling cans because they seem to wander off.

Ryan, I forgot to mention I tried the bucket trick a few weeks ago and it didn’t work! Obviously, I must have done something wrong.

Maria — The trick is the temperature (hot) and the height that you pour from (waist height).
