Half-days at work are excellent.
When you take a full day off, you’re likely to sleep in and waste away your day (I am, at least). But, if you’ve got a half-day, you’re up and moving early in an attempt to get as much work done in the AM as possible. You don’t have to make lunch in the morning since you’ll be eating at home and you have the momentum going to ensure that you don’t find yourself unshowered and eating breakfast at 2pm.
Then, your afternoon is free to do all those errands that would take a long time if you waited until the weekend or after work to do (food shopping, hair cut, anything that involves going to a store and waiting in line).
That, friends, is why half-days make Baby Jesus happy.

Agreed! Every month or so we have a half-day (well, more like we get to leave at 3pm), and it feels both like I was productive and like I got time off.
