I’m pretty sure we have just one thing in our house which uses a D cell battery… and we almost never have enough extra batteries for that device on hand. Opps.
The good news? If you’ve got C cell batteries and about 75 cents in quarters, you’re good to go! Sure, it’s not a long-term fix but I have to admit that it is pretty cool.
Now if someone can cram a couple of AAs into a C, I’ll be thrilled.

Hey, Paul, have you heard about the trick where you can turn your C batteries into D batteries with quarters? It’s neat!

Hm, no. Can you tell me more?

Who has extra C cells around? I can’t think of anything that we own that requires a C battery.

The same *could* be done with AA cells. The voltage is the same. But if it’s a heavy-duty device requiring amperage it might not work. Then again, AA batteries have gotten a lot better what with the requirements of digital cameras. A modern AA might be as strong as an old D.
