I Love My Cell Phone

There’s some new cell phone thing coming out this week from… who’s that? Apple, I think. Yeah, it’s the iPhone from Apple. I guess they’re making it out to be a big deal…

Okay, okay, enough of that.

With the iPhone coming out this week (indeed) and lots and lots and lots and lots of hype, it has highlighted one issue with a lot of existing cell phones: they stink. I can truthfully say I’ve never used a cell phone that had a great user interface, nor have I used one that has been a joy to use. I get upset with my phone almost all the time for the little things.

For instance, if I want to erase all old text messages, I don’t go to the “Erase Multiple” menu; instead I need to use “Erase” and then choose “Erase All”. I guess “all” isn’t multiple?

That’s just one little issue out of many. I am curious if there are any people who really do love their cell phones beyond the “always in touch” aspect, which would apply to any reliable modern phone. So, are there?

I don’t know if I “loved” it, but I really liked my old cell phone. I got a new one a few months ago because I was eligible for a new one, not because I needed a new one or especially wanted one, and I hate it. I figured I’d get used to it after a month or so, what with all the differences from my old one, but no…it’s just getting worse.

I hate pretty much everything about cell phone interfaces. I’ve never used one that’s been remotely intuitive. I’ve had my current phone for a year and get this: I still have trouble answering the damn thing if it’s in “lock” mode. Sure, I’m an idiot, but shouldn’t an idiot be able to answer his calls?

As generally unenthused as I am about the iPhone (a phone! that does things! … yay?), I hope at the very least it’ll change the tide when it comes to cell phone UI.

What is this then?
