Early Rising

I’ve never been much of a morning person, as I’m sure I’ve discussed here before. My most productive times were often after midnight and in college, I was known to sleep until lunch regularly. Even just a few years ago, I still managed to get out of bed after 8am and make it to work by 9.

Then we got a dog.

And had a baby human.

Now, I’m up an extra hour early to get the four-legged daughter walked and help out with the two-legged daughter as needed. And on the one day every couple of weeks where the potential is there to sleep beyond 8am, it rarely happens since a certain little person begins to rise about that time.

I don’t really mind being forced to grow up and become a morning person all that much. What I do regret, though, is that I’ve seemingly lost the ability to stay up late and get lots of things done. When it was just me and the dog for a few days, most nights I fell asleep on the couch by 10. College Me would be very saddened by that. I guess that’s OK, though, because College Me was broke.

Being the father of a 3-month-old, I chalk it up to the extra effort made to keep up with the housework, while trying to help out with the little one in the evenings to give the wife a break for a bit, since she’s been doing the baby thing all day. When we only had to take care of our own dumb asses, a lot less effort was required, and therefore we could stay up later and talk about the things we should get done.

I’m without wife and child tonight, and I look forward to going to bed at 10 for a full 8 hours of sleep…even if it’s just a regular mattress and not the bags of money Ryan apparently sleeps on these days.

“…not the bags of money Ryan apparently sleeps on these days.”

For the record, Ryan sleeps on an organic money mattress.

What is this then?
