Hotel Toiletries: Home or Away?

Thanks to Pinger Cat for suggesting this timely topic.

When you’re staying at a hotel, do you prefer to use your own toiletries or the ones provided by the hotel? And does it vary for you depending on your stay’s length?

For me the quick answer is, “The hotel’s stuff.” I don’t care enough about soap or shampoo to bring my own. I do bring my own toothbrush, toothpaste, razor, shaving cream, et al.

However, I did forget my toothbrush a couple weeks back and that enabled me to experience the cheapest toothbrush ever made. It made me long for a dollar store toothbrush. That’s sad.

It depends on my length of stay. I pack my own stuff, but if it’s just a one nighter, well, that hotel’s going to supply me with soap and shampoo.

Definitely the hotel’s. While I’m not normally a cheap person, hotels bring it out in me. After using the shampoo and mouthwash, I immediately sock away the bottles in my luggage. Then when the room service comes, they’ll leave more. Once the new bottles are left, I bring back out the used ones and continue using them for the duration of the stay while putting the new bottles in my luggage to take home. If I’m feeling particularly cheap and staying for several days, I may repeat that process a couple of times.

I keep them under my sink at home for those times when I run out of either and forget to pick up more. It’s like having a little in reserve.

I bring mostly my own, but I DO take the free stuff…I recently stayed at a Holiday Inn Express that had really cool toiletries. They were very simply-packaged, in an almost IKEAesque way. They came home with me, yes indeed.

I travel for business, and I travel for pleasure. When I travel for business, I stock up on the free soap, shampoo, and whatever else is available in the room that my company is paying for. When I travel for pleasure usually I stay in very inexpensive rooms in dirt poor third world countries occupied by cockroaches almost as big as the shoe which I use to squash them, where no clean water is supplied, let alone shampoo. So everything evens out. That’s the way I look at it.

The hotel’s stuff, for what they provide.

And since they toss those shampoo bottles after you’ve used even a drop of them, I pack those and bring them home. There’s one in my shower right now.

What is this then?
