First Post Insanity

One thing I’ve never understood is the highly annoying concept of “first post,” where the first user to comment on a thread on a popular site like Slashdot will exclaim only that he’s the first to respond. There’s almost never any useful content and it’s not unusual for there to be three “first post!” posts written within a few seconds of each other. It serves no purpose other than to say, “I was sitting here reloading Slashdot over and over until I saw a new post and then replied! Wheeeee!”

It would be one thing if it stuck to one of the most popular sites on the Internets, but it’s everywhere now. Even on Pam Beesley’s MySpace blog.

It’s irritating and people need to stop it.

I think it’s a fandom sort of thing.. like “I hang off of your every word, and wanted to indicate I was the first one to reply to you so you know how much I love you”. Or something. No, I don’t understand it completely. And I am happily not popular enough to have ever gotten one of those comments. 😉

What’s with the ads?

What is this then?

The Daily Ping is the web's finest compendium of toilet information and Oreo™® research. Too much? Okay, okay, it's a daily opinion column written by two friends. Did we mention we've been doing this for over ten years? Tell me more!
