Back when I was a kid there were a number of traditional Thanksgiving foods I didn’t care for. I hated the tartness of cranberry sauce, and I really didn’t like the spice or texture of pumpkin pie.
Funny thing: I like both a lot, now. Cranberry is probably one of my top 3 berries but we’re here today to talk about pumpkin pie. Pumpkin pie dates all the way back to 1621 with the semi-modern interpretation coming forth at the end of the 1700s. It’s old cookin’.
My favorite thing about pumpkin pie is indeed that custard texture. It’s rough when you have a pie with a non-creamy and brittle filling: a solid pumpkin pie should have a smooth, nice, rich-but-not-too-rich filling. The funny thing is that while I’m particular about pie crust in general, I largely don’t care when it comes to pumpkin. Use store-bought stuff… fine. It’s a second fiddle to the filling.
Pumpkin pie: it’s old, it’s creamy, and it’s delicious. I say, eat it.

It’s tough to go wrong with homemade pumpkin pie. The recipes on the cans of pureed pumpkin do a great job. The store-bought fresh crusts work just as well as going to the trouble of homemade, plus, you can use your own glass pan instead of that stupid foil that dries everything out.
Here’s my trick: fresh whipped cream is a must. No Redi-Wip crap, no Cool-Whip crap. Just heavy whipping cream with a dash of sugar and a drop of vanilla and beat until whippy. My trick for super pumpkin pie. Find some whole nutmeg and grind it yourself on the old standard kitched grater. Only use a little. There’s nothing like fresh nutmeg. Sprinkle a tiny amount on pumpkin pie with the whip cream on it and people will go nuts. NUTS, I tell ya!!!

OKAY SO LISTEN MY PUMPKIN PIE IS BETTER THEN YOUR PUMPKIN PIE.
