In the paper this morning was a curious snippet about an article in Details magazine titled “22 Sandwiches That Will Change Your Life.” Sounded like a good idea to rip-of… er, explore here on the Ping. (The article’s author has blogged some of them.)
I noticed it because one of the sandwiches was one that really did change my life, too: an Italian beef from Johnnie’s Beef in Elmwood Park, IL. Holy. Crap. Best Italian beef sandwich ever. I had heard so much about Johnnie’s, and grew up relatively close to it. Every time I went by it, I remember seeing lines out the door from its narrow, standing-room-only building. Could anything there possibly be that good? I’m pleased to report the answer is… yes. The beef is nice and thin, with good spice. The roll? Perfect. Hearty but not too hearty, chewy but not tough. And of course, they dip the whole thing in juice – this is optional but, truly, the way to go. Amazing sandwich.
Tell me about a sandwich that made your life better.

Homemade tempeh reubens… I never thought I’d get that flavor (or mess!) back again, but Praise Isa, I have. So good.

Any sandwich I could sell and could make a profit changed my life. LOL. Especially when I was the chef of a tea room. Talk about a specific target market!
