You might call me crazy, but I’m one of those people who can eat and enjoy tortilla chips without salsa.
Now, I have nothing against salsa – in fact, I really like it! Salsa is a great condiment, and goes great on hot dogs. (er… not really.) But there’s something quite appealing about just having a tortilla chip: plain, salty, corny. Delicious.
Unless, of course, it has a strange lime caking on it.

Especially when you go to a Mexican Restaurant that serves the Tortilla Chips right out of the oven/fryer, nice and hot. MMM.
Put me down as another who says “no” to salsa. Now, if you are making some homemade Queso Dip…with ground beef…..I’m in trouble.

I also prefer chips w/o salsa. My favorite chips are ones which are just caked with cooking coil to the point where they are chewy (extra bonus points if you have 2 which are stuck together!!). Add liberal dosage of salt, and they are nothing short of decadent.

I guess I’m kind of middle of the road here, so color me “inclusive”. I love salsa on my tortilla chips, I love them in nachos (mmm… fresh El Famous Steak Nachos = yummmmmm; although good auto racetrack nachos with nacho cheese and jalapenos = nice too), I love them with queso, or chili con queso. I love the extra-salty variety they dish out at Chipotle with their corn salsa (medium). I like the lime flavored varieties that Paul dislikes, which are also good with or without salsa. I even have to admit to taking a big bowl of them and squirting some Ranch dressing on them… it’s kind of a non-processed version of the whole “Cool Ranch Dorito” thing.
Then again… I’m also the guy that toasts Roman Meal bread and has a bologna, cheese, and salsa sandwich… so mileage may vary. LoL At least I don’t have ketchup on my ketchup though. Some people might as well bathe in the stuff they put it on everything else. 😉
But… I can also sit around and munch on “nekkid” white corn tortilla chips. They’re quite addicting plain. Scarily enough… I had the whole grain tortilla chips recently and as disturbed as I was by the whole premise of a tortilla chip that wasn’t strictly corn, I have to admit that they’re pretty darn good too.
Just umm… no black bean salsa. I’m not much of a fan of black beans as it stands, so making salsa out of them is about as appealing as making a burger out of fish guts. Bleh…
