The Daily Ping

Mute Point

I’m not sure why it happened, exactly, but at one point one of my former bosses started talking about something that was a “mute” point. Not “moot,” but “mute.” He also did this on more than one occasion.

I figured it was just his misunderstanding of the phrase (and never corrected him,) but that isn’t the case: I was reading a blog yesterday that referred to a “mute” point.

The good news is that the Grammar Police are on my side. There is no such thing as a “mute” point – it’s just wrong, really. I like the link from World Wide Words that actually takes the time to hypothesize where the phrase may have originated. But it’s still wrong, so in your face, Grammar Slobs!
