Even though I talked about how much I hate the overabundance of low-carb food and drink, there are two products that deserve special mention: Coke’s new C2 and Pepsi Edge.
I tried both of them at the supermarket last weekend, and Target is promoting a tasting in its stores this weekend. For reference, I’m not a fan of Diet Coke or regular Pepsi, but do like Diet Pepsi and regular Coke (not together.) Got it? Good.
The first I tried was C2. The result is pretty much what you’d expect: a combination of Diet Coke and regular Coke, with a bit of a chemical (artificial sweetener) taste and aftertaste. To me it seemed pretty pointless, and the fact that Coke is selling these in 8-packs and 18-packs is also pretty pointless. Plus, there’s a premium over regular Coke or Diet Coke. Here’s a tip: buy some Coke and some Diet Coke, and mix 50/50.
Pepsi Edge, which really needs to be called Pepsi Edge EXTREME!!!, had a similar composition but Pepsi is already a sweet cola. This tasted quite sugary, and didn’t have as much of the artificial sweetener taste of C2: Electric Bugaloo. Was it good? Not really. It tasted like a generic soda that wasn’t quite Pepsi or Diet Pepsi.
The bottom line is that if you’re thinking of trying a low-carb soda, drink water.
