Double-siding single-sided floppies

Here’s a flashback for you longtime computer users: remember how you could buy either single-sided or double-sided 5.25″ floppy disks? Of course single-sided disks (or, if you prefer, “diskettes”) were cheaper and it was a pretty commonly-known fact that the only difference between single-sided and double-sided was the notch in the side of the disk. All one had to do to use both sides of a single-sided floppy was to punch a hole in the right spot using either a plain hole punch or a specialized punching device for doing such. I fondly remember taking one floppy and placing it face down on another floppy to trace where on the disk the hole was placed and then using my dad’s hole puncher to double my capacity.

Ah, the good old days.
