A while ago, Ryan ruminated on the virtues of public transportation. Living in a city that boasts a good public transportation system certainly makes getting around easier.
But one of the things that I’ve noticed is that some people are very, very surprised to hear that I take public transportation and own a car; it’s as if the two are mutually exclusive. There are many reasons why I don’t drive to work every day, but I never really thought of the two as incompatible. Although, as I touched on in my comment to Ryan’s Ping, some areas just aren’t designed for public transportation.
Sure, sometimes you get a “unique” character or eight on the train, or on the bus. But that’s part of the appeal… and you don’t have to worry about those same characters sitting behind 5,000 pound vehicles, either.
