Fixing Metal Detectors

While I’m not flying any time soon, I must say I’m concerned about the way metal detectors have been accidentally unplugged.

This isn’t the newest in technology, I realize. But I’m wondering why these metal detectors don’t have simple alarms to note that they’re off. Or alternately, battery backup units to keep them juiced for a while.

The metal detector has become, inadvertently, the first line of defense in our airports over the past six months. If this is it, do we really want something that can be so easily unplugged? And do we want something that can be unplugged without anyone realizing it?

When we’re putting so much faith in something so fallible, it concerns me. Why doesn’t the government see this? -pm
