For another month or so, I have to use dialup. It hasn’t been a problem (though I do feel those lack-of-bandwidth blues on a near-daily basis)… the real problem has been this little addition to Mac OS X 10.1:
The dialog box comes up every so often when I’m online. It doesn’t matter if I’m actively doing something online or not – the box pops up, interrupts my work, and annoys the heck out of me.
So can I get rid of it? I just found out that, yes, it can be turned off. But it’s illogically placed. I’d expect to be able to click on the modem status in the menu bar, and change it from there. Nope. Well, maybe it’s in System Preferences/ Internet. Nope. Okay, since this is a dialup network connection, maybe in System Preferences/ Network? Nope… er, wait! I can click on the PPP Options button in the PPP tab, and there, finally is the place to turn it off.
What a huge, huge misstep by Apple. I’d at least expect a checkbox in the above dialog box: “Don’t show me this again.” Then, darn it, tell me where I can change this setting. This box has frustrated me for a good month – it’s nice to know it’s going to be gone, now… but it shouldn’t’ve been this hard to remedy. -pm
