A few thoughts on dogs

A few days ago I read with a heavy heart that Khoi Vinh’s dog, Mister President, died after developing cancer.

I don’t know Khoi personally. I got to meet him at SXSW this year after attending his great talk, but you know, you can tell a lot about a person by the way she or he treats a pet. And based on Khoi’s post – and later exploration of his feelings – I sense he’s a stand up guy.

We’ve had our dog, Wally, for 5 years now and I can’t quite imagine what life would be like without him. Wally is relentlessly loyal and eager, always willing to play or protect (via barking!) with nary a request. As I type this he’s just laying next to me on the couch, content as can be. I only hope that the way I treat Wally is at least as good as Khoi treated his dog.
