I’m guessing that ten years ago, I could not have imagined storing data at Amazon for a penny a gigabyte.
But, here it is. Amazon Glacier is a data storage thingamajig. The difference with this versus, say, S3 is that it doesn’t allow for instantaneous retrieval. What’s it good for then?
Offsite cloud backup on the cheap.
The downside is that there isn’t yet an app to do this, at least not one that I’m aware of, so it’s a total DIY thing with an SDK accessible via Java and .NET. Arq, a Mac app, already backs up to S3 so I’m guessing Glacier support isn’t far behind.
Pretty amazing stuff!
