dipr: The Review

In November 2010 I first learned of the dipr, a utensil designed to assist in dunking Oreo cookies in milk. The concept behind the dipr was simple: dipping a cookie with one’s fingers is not completely efficient nor, arguably, completely sanitary. So stick a cookie on the dipr, pop it in milk, and enjoy.

I was pleasantly surprised to find a dipr amongst my Christmas presents, and was eager to give it a try.

The dipr comes simply packaged in a plastic bag. A small sticker is included, just like Apple. Unlike Apple, though, the dipr I have is the blue and white model. It essentially looks like a plaque removal tool for a large animal but, uh, more fun.

The first step is to put a cookie onto the dipr. This was unexpectedly odd. The hook smooshed easily into the creme of my cookies (genuine Oreo, non-Double Stuf) so much that the dipr could have taken out all of the creme completely if one wasn’t careful. Instead, I found a happy medium with the hook pushed into the creme just enough. I admit, though, it didn’t feel totally stable.

Then, the moment of truth: the dunk! Fortunately, I lost no cookies to the milk below. The dipr held on to the Oreo securely. And it was really lovely to have the entire cookie dipped in milk. But the hard part was removing the cookie from the dipr. Truthfully, this isn’t easy. I opted to simply eat the cookie off of the dipr. Because of this, it’s one bite or bust: taking a small bite out of the cookie won’t work for the amount of milk I prefer. It’s a little tough to wrestle the cookie off of the dipr.

But the end result is, in fact, a fully-dipped Oreo. Mission accomplished.

I have to say that I’m a little disappointed in the dipr. It was fun for the first few cookies, but later I felt that just dipping using my fingers was faster. Sure, this meant I didn’t have a fully-dipped cookie, but then I’m not sure that the difference between fully- and partially- dipped was so great that it required use of the dipr.

I will add, though, that if you have a chocolate fountain handy – and who doesn’t? – the dipr is required.

All told, not bad for three bucks, but not revolutionary. Sorry, dipr.
