The Daily Ping

The original Ping was painfully written in Perl.

GeoCities lives! Sorta.

The wonderful One Terabyte of Kilobyte Age takes long forgotten (and now unavailable) Geocities web sites back to attention. The content is carefully curated from the massive GeoCities torrent that was created by Jason Scott’s Archive Team (motto: “We are going to rescue your shit”).

The other day, 1 TB made a pretty shocking discovery: a surviving user site still on geocities.com. How’d that happen? There’s one theory that involves .htaccess files. But that’s about it.

Either way, pretty weird stuff. It’s kind of like those dreams where you run into someone you thought was dead and they’re like, “Oh, I was, but I’m back now.” Except instead of Aunt Matilda, it’s a random Geocities page from 2001.

What is this then?

The Daily Ping is the web's finest compendium of toilet information and Oreo™® research. Too much? Okay, okay, it's a daily opinion column written by two friends. Did we mention we've been doing this for over ten years? Tell me more!
