For ever and ever, I had a… thing… against live albums. I didn’t mind them, really, but I felt that the full in-studio performances were more of a measuring stick for an artist. Kind of like how I feel about musical comedy, except that I really value live music.
It’s not as if I don’t go to concerts. I don’t go to a ton of them, but I do really like seeing live music especially in smaller venues. But live albums do have an energy about them; it’s just that I’d like to experience that energy in the moment, live.
That all said, there are a couple of live albums I really enjoy. One is R.E.M.’s Live at the Olympia. This sprawling set includes tons of songs the band had never played live. And then there’s Tegan and Sara’s more recent Get Along, a really solid set that showcases one of my new favorite bands.
