I work in Chicago and when you’re in the city every day, you begin to expect a few things. Jaywalking is generally okay. There’s a Starbucks and Potbelly on every corner. And you can catch a cab anywhere.
But once you’re out of downtown things get a bit less structured. For instance, the intersection of Elston and Armitage is pretty much cab-free. You can look for cabs or even call cab companies, but no cabs will come. It’s like a giant black hole exists there, and no taxi can escape it.
Lesson learned? Memorize the bus schedules.
