This morning we had a large tree in our backyard cut down to the ground. It was sickly and growing at a terrible angle, one where the top branches scraped our neighbor’s upstairs window and if it were to fall, it would take out a 1/3rd of their backyard fencing.
I realized once the tree trimmer started climbing the tree: that guy is good. I mean, you’ve gotta be in that line of work. If you’re only OK, you’ll drop branches on people’s heads, you’ll take a fall from 50 feet up, or otherwise make a mess of things really easily. This guy was hanging over our neighbor’s yard, on a thin branch, with a freaking chainsaw in his hand doing work. I mean, a chainsaw in my hands on the ground is a dangerous weapon… trying to wield that thing while dangling from a diseased tree? That’s some talent.
So: respect due to all those people that climb tall, dying trees in small backyards. You’re expensive, but you earn that money.

My fiancee informed me that her mother (who is a medical examiner) has had to go see many bodies of tree cutters who have had mishaps. So it’s a dangerous line of work to be in. I’m glad nothing happened to your guy!

Um, fiancee? Clearly I’ve missed something along the way! Congrats, Rob!
And to awkwardly follow that with a reply to your comment: I can only imagine the types of things that can happen when tree cutting goes wrong.

Yup yup. I’ve got a fiancee. And I didn’t even have to pay for her! 🙂 We’re not sure when we’re getting married yet, but since we got engaged on my birthday, we’re thinking of possibly doing it on hers in June. But we’ll see. Your wedding’s still the best one I’ve ever been to. Even thinking about planning something like that makes my brain hurt.
