My iPod May Live Forever

My iPod is four years old. I mistakenly thought it was five years old. But I’m starting to think it’s going to live for a long, long time.

I replaced the battery on it earlier this year – a cost-savings measure, frankly, versus buying an iPod touch. But the touch beckoned. “Buy me! I’m only about 10 times what you paid for that battery!” And I was tempted. But the iPod still worked just fine and did all I need it to do, really.

Then my wife went to play some music from it and… nothing. The screen was frozen in time from 7:48 the prior night. It was unresponsive. No magic button presses revived it. The iPod touch was behind it. I’m sure it was. “I’m cheaper than ever! You just got a gift certificate from Amazon!” it said.

When I brought the iPod back in the house last night, though, a quick press of the menu button brought it back to life. Its battery was nearly depleted, but it worked fine. While the iPod touch was angry, my wallet remained content.

I’ve owned my iPod mini since 2004. Still works just fine.

My iPod is now going on 3 years old. (80Gb iPod video, non-touch). With all the flying and traveling I did with my last job, combined with the fact that I’m a bit on the clumsy side, I’m amazed my iPod works as well as it does. Only once have I had to do a complete restore from iTunes.

Despite the fact that I’ve dropped it about 100 times in a crowded airport, it looks and works great…minus a few scratches on the metal backside of it. All the more reason I’m scared to upgrade. One drop, and it’ll probably be all over with.

What is this then?
