Macarons, not Macaroons

A couple of weeks ago I stopped by the new Chicago French Market and picked up a box of macaroons for The Wife and I to enjoy. And they sure were tasty!

But after eating one The Wife said, “I think these are macarons, actually… not macaroons.” My reply was a thoughtful, deep, and introspective, “Huh!”

Sure enough we were enjoying macarons which were even labeled and called macaroons by mistake. And there’s a huge huge difference: these are more sandwich-like (think Oreo) and macaroons are delicious coconut-based cookies. It’s a pretty easy error to make really, and even when searching for links for this Ping I found a slew of images claiming to be macaroons when in reality, they were macarons. Tsk tsk!

(Oh… I don’t really consider whoopie pies to be macarons; they’re an entirely other foodstuff.)

I approve of both macarons and macaroons, and am now pleased to know the difference.
