A Social Network Problem Yet Unsolved

You know, I like being able to see what extended family and friends are up to via Facebook and Twitter. But there’s a gap that’s missing: squelching.

Back in the Olden Days, When I Was Your Age, etc.: GEnie, and presumably other online services, had CB simulators… really… chat rooms. And one of the options I distinctly remember was squelching, silencing updates from a particular user until an unsquelch command was issued.

I want that for all my social networks. And I want it to be keyword-based, too, so if someone talks about something I find loathsome, I can just not even see it. Like it didn’t exist. No hurt feelings.

I mean, isn’t technology designed to help us avoid confrontation?

What is this then?

The Daily Ping is the web's finest compendium of toilet information and Oreo™® research. Too much? Okay, okay, it's a daily opinion column written by two friends. Did we mention we've been doing this for over ten years? Tell me more!
