Sitcoms in the 80s were known for their lazy “flashback” episodes, but the other night I encountered what may be the worst of them all.
It’s the Golden Girls episode where Sophia is accused of having set Shady Pines retirement home on fire. You’d think it would be a serious episode, what with the prospect of 82-year-old Sophia possibly headed to the slammer for arson. But, instead, it’s turned into a flashback episode where the girls flashback to absolutely nothing relevant. Like when they had to take care of a baby and had to sing “Mr. Sandman” to get him to sleep. Or when Dorothy and Sophia dressed up like Sonny and Cher to sing “I Got You, Babe.” Or when Blanche’s daughter was getting artificially inseminated. It made absolutely no sense and felt like it was a cheap way to pad out an episode.
Except they made it a two-freaking-parter.
Indeed, in the second-to-last season, the writers and producers were getting awfully lazy.
