This weekend has been a major home improvement weekend at the McAleer Ranch, and one of the big tasks on our list was to get rid of our ugly ass ceiling fans.
Our house was built in ’73 and while The Wife suggested they might have been original, I put the fans in the early 80s. In either case they weren’t the most attractive fans. All of them were functional (and still are)… just… old.
I was fearing the worst due to the involvement of electricity, really; I know next to nothing about it (like plumbing) but can and have installed light fixtures before. It’s pretty much the same with a ceiling fan, except that the thing is heavy. It’s a little daunting, too, to install a mount up on the ceiling and then hang the whole fan motor from it, hinged open, in order to finish the wiring. Thankfully the old fans were installed well and didn’t require new ceiling holes.
But aside from a few small blunders, like forgetting to leave a couple of screws in on one of the brackets, it really wasn’t that bad. And now our offices and bedroom look a hell of a lot nicer.
If I can do it, you can do it.
Now if I could just get the light switches on the walls to control the fans….

I just installed a new ceiling fam this past weekend too. I also installed one of those switches that you can turn the light on and off (and dim) and turn off/change fan speeds. The switched replaced a regular toggle switch that required me to use the pull chains on the old fan.
