The VA State Seal

The Virginia State Seal looks, at first glance, to be pretty impressive. Approved in 1776, the seal shows Roman goddess Virtus standing over a defeated enemy. One might even call this seal majestic.

But take a look at a closer view of the seal. What in the world is that Virtus is holding? That’s no sword, I tell you. Is this something that’s never been spotted before? I can understand the folks in 1776 may have missed it, but what about in 1949 when the Virginia Art Commission defined the offical color scheme? Surely they saw what I see now… or am I just crazy? -ram
