As Pingers may know between Ryan and I, I’m the coffee drinker. I’ve gone through a number of coffee makers, like good coffee, and done hard-hitting consumer investigative journalism on it. But the funny thing is that while I referenced a French press in that 2003 Ping I never actually used one.
When I was at a friend’s house last month, she made coffee using a press. And while it was super-strong – her style – it seemed… better. I decided then and there to investigate these presses a little more. After days of research and a solid sale on Amazon, I ended up with a Bodum press.
This past weekend I tried it for the first time. I was a bit nervous as I hadn’t used one before and feared screwing something up. But it’s pretty simple: grind the beans, put ’em in the press, add hot water, steep, plunge, drink. This simple little thing makes very good coffee. Very good. I’m still wrapping my brain about the best ratio of coffee to grounds (yes, despite having a tiny scoop with the press and knowing 1/2 tablespoon for every cup “works”) but even that first weak cup I made had a lot more flavor going on from the exact same coffee I had used the previous day. Amazing!
As a bonus, no paper filters and no electricity used – I just heat the water up on our gas stove.
While I may not use the press every single morning, my coffee maker has been cold for days due to this little device. Highly recommended.
