When I hear the phrase “major television event”, I have a few things in mind. The Moon Landing. September 11th. The Challenger Explosion. The Seinfeld finale. (Well, maybe not that last one.)
But it’s weird: I keep hearing this phrase used over and over to the point of stupidity. For instance, USA has a pedestrian new series whose premier is being deemed… a major television event. (Oh, and apparently, this series includes some sort of diet – “Six Weeks to the Starter Wife Body!” – yeesh.)
We should just use this phrase all the time. New season of Mythbusters? Major television event. Series finale of Lost? Major television event. New Mac/PC ad? Major television event.
Come to think of it, I can think of a real, true major television event: the cancellation of According to Jim.

“Starter wife”? That just makes it sound like the divorce rate is *way* up…
