Baked Chips That Don’t Suck

A while ago, a new line of potato chips came out called “Wow!” This brilliantname could be found on a whole line of chips from Frito-Lay. The point?Low-calorie, low-fat chips. Unfortunately, no one was informed that theexclamation of “Wow!” was followed by, “I just crapped my pants!” (I guessthat didn’t sell.)

So the first generation of baked chips went away, eventually, in favor of bakedchips. There’s only one problem, though: every baked chip I’ve ever had has tastedvery un-chip-like. They all tasted more like Munchos to me. That’snot bad in and of itself, but if I want chips, I want chips.

This past week, then, I was pleased to see baked chips from Kettle atTrader Joe’s. And you know what? They’re actually good. They taste like potatoes(go figure!) and, while not exactly the chip flavor one might want, certainly come closer than any of the heavily-marketed baked products.

Only problem is that the lightly salted ones really are lightly salted –really lightly salted. But I can live with that, and I’m impressed thatthere’s a tasty baked chip out there at all.

Better than anal leakage.
