Too Many Feeds

Over the past month or two I’ve been trying to trim down the number of sites in my feedreader. It had gotten out of hand. But yesterday, even after having trimmed a couple dozen sites from the list, I still had 22,000 unread items. Fat chance I was ever going to get to those. Many of them came from content-heavy sites like Boing Boing and the Make Magazine blog. Four feeds alone had over 5,000 unread items.

So I went in with a machete and started chopping ruthlessly. Boing Boing here, Treehugger there, Gizmodo here, Kottke there. It’s not that I’m never going to read these sites again. Actually, I think that if I’m forced to actually visit the sites occasionally, I’ll read more rather than just letting unread items build up in my reader.

This morning I’ve got it down to 7,386 unread items and I’ve slashed almost 50 subscriptions since I started. There’s still more to go, though.

People just need to stop creating good content.

What is this then?

The Daily Ping is the web's finest compendium of toilet information and Oreo™® research. Too much? Okay, okay, it's a daily opinion column written by two friends. Did we mention we've been doing this for over ten years? Tell me more!
