Band Aid 2004

So after hearing a big brouhaha about how iTunes UK wasn’t carrying the Band Aid 2004 single, “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” I was a bit perplexed. I mean it was a good song and all, for the time, but a remake? Eh.

But then I heard it! Oh, did I hear it! And my opinion changed… okay, okay, it didn’t change at all. The remake is pretty much by-the-numbers. Nothing new except the addition of a little rap here and there. The whole thing sounds slicker and doesn’t have that same Christmas vibe, to my ears, that the original did.

More interesting is that in the US, coverage of this has been nearly nonexistent. The last Band Aid single made a mark across the globe, but this one seems to just be making a slight indentation in the UK. So why bother? Couldn’t they have done a new song? Or maybe a remake of “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer.” A classic, that.
