Hell Money

Did you know that your deceased relatives that went on to Heaven take vacations in Hell? I didn’t either. But the Vietnamese knew all along.

I found out this weekend that part of the ancestor worship ritual involves burning “Hell Money” (fake bills that actually have “Hell Bank Note” emblazoned on them) on special occasions. Burning the money acts as a sort of deposit to the dead ancestor’s bank account, and allows them to take a trip to Hell and enjoy the pleasures it has to offer, like gambling.

Really, I’m not making this up. Here’s proof:

Hell Money

I’d imagine ancestors have got to be pretty happy when they see an unexpected deposit in their account. Hopefully they enjoy their trips to Hell and find their way back safely, with a little money to spare.
