Surfers

The other day, I was watching a news report on television. The anchor said, “For more information, surfers can check out our website…” and, for some reason, it struck me as odd. It got me to wondering if people really “surf” the web anymore.

With the upsurge in usability and practicality, a good chunk of the web is becoming purposeful… which means that surfing or looking for things is, perhaps, becoming less of a necessity. But that means surfing could be a leisure activity, right? So why would I “surf” to a website on purpose?

Do you surf the web, or do you “get stuff done” on the web? Should we retire the surfing term?

What is this then?

The Daily Ping is the web's finest compendium of toilet information and Oreo™® research. Too much? Okay, okay, it's a daily opinion column written by two friends. Did we mention we've been doing this for over ten years? Tell me more!
